Care Navigation

In response to a national shortage of GP’s and the backlog caused by the COVID crisis, the Scottish Government announced significant changes to the way medical practices must work. From now on, GP’s are no longer to be the first point of contact for many health issues. Various tasks previously performed by GP’s or their staff will now be undertaken by Health Board staff either in the surgery or in local Centres called Hubs. This will enable GP’s to concentrate on more complex problems and relieve the pressure on hospitals.

All receptionists have received extra training by the GP’s to enable them to help you navigate the new system. Confidentiality remains paramount but you will need to be asked a few basic questions about your reason for calling in order to ensure that you are seen as soon as possible by the team member best able to help. This is called triage. You will then be offered a face-to-face or telephone consultation as clinically appropriate. There is no need to divulge highly personal/embarrassing information to the receptionist- just enough information for them to point you to the correct professional to meet your expectations.

Please see the below leaflet for information on the services our reception team may direct your care to.

Your appointment

However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:

  • face to face at the surgery
  • by phone

Appointments by phone can be more flexible but GPs do still prefer Face to Face appointments particularly for new symptoms.

Two mornings per week (Wednesday and Thursday) we offer early hours appointments from 7.15am.

If we have a mobile number for you in our patient record. You will get a text reminder for your upcoming apppointment.

You may consult with any doctor within the Practice by ringing Reception and making an appointment. When following up on a problem, it is strongly advised that you try to consult with the same doctor.

General points for all appointments:

  1. One appointment – one patient – please do not ask the doctor or nurse to see other members of your family during your appointment.
  2. Please remember that the doctor is unlikely to be able to deal with multiple problems at one appointment.  The doctor is likely to ask you to make another appointment if you wish to discuss multiple unrelated issues. You can ask for a double appointment when you make your original booking if you know you have a few symptoms you wish to discuss.
  3. If you are unable to manage your appointment, please ring up to cancel it, thereby freeing it for somebody else.
  4. If you are attending an appointment at the Practice, please always make sure that the front desk receptionist is aware that you are in the waiting room so we can check you in.
  5. In addition, the doctors may ask you to call the Practice in a specified number of weeks to provide an update, perhaps to discuss a response to medication or recovery from illness or surgery. Should you just wish to leave a message for the doctor please advise the receptionist and this will be passed on.

Home visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10:00 hours

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
